When Tanks Roll

Subject: Letter to the Editor (The Sheridan Press) Submission — When Tanks Roll, Seniors and Kids Get Crushed

To the Editor,

Military parades in the 1960s and ’70s played out while the nation was divided over Vietnam — an unpopular war where soldiers were often mistreated, and the public questioned why we were there at all. Those parades weren’t just patriotic displays; they were political theater, meant to project strength and silence dissent.

Now, Trump wants a massive military parade costing millions of taxpayer dollars — the same dollars taken from programs that help seniors, children, and families. He claims to fight waste, fraud, and abuse, but where’s the outrage over this unnecessary spectacle?

This isn’t about honoring our military. If we truly wanted to honor them, we’d invest in veterans’ healthcare, mental health services, and better pay for active-duty families — not put tanks in the streets.

We must ask: who is this really for? Not veterans waiting months for care. Not seniors choosing between food and heat. Not kids losing afterschool programs. This is a distraction — a show meant to divide, stir up nationalism, and feed egos.

We deserve leadership that invests in people, not parades; in care, not spectacle. Let’s speak up and demand our tax dollars go where they matter most: to the lives, dignity, and future of Americans.

Sincerely,
Sydnee Alyster
