WYOMING REPUBLICANS KICK DEMOCRATS OFF EDUCATION COMMITTEES, HURTING SCHOOLS AND COMMUNITIES.
Jackson, WY – Republican leaders in the Wyoming House and Senate announced committee assignments for the year, and for the first time, Democrats have been completely removed from the Education Committees. This decision is a serious blow to Wyoming’s children and educators.
Wyoming’s public schools have been successful because leaders from all sides have worked together to support teachers and students. Taking Democrats off the Education Committees shows that leadership is more interested in political control than working together to solve real problems.
Sen. Chris Rothfuss and Rep. Karlee Provenza both have firsthand experience in education-Rothfuss has taught at the University of Wyoming for years, and Provenza spent years teaching at the University while serving on the House Education Committee. Losing their voices means the committees will have less knowledge and fewer perspectives at a time when Wyoming’s schools are struggling with teacher shortages, student mental health issues, and funding challenges in rural areas.
“Our schools are the heart of Wyoming’s communities,” said Rep. Karlee Provenza, House Minority Whip. Wyoming schools face challenges like teacher shortages, declining enrollment, increases in student mental health issues, and rural school funding. Excluding Democrats means fewer voices advocating for transparency and honesty in education decisions.
“This move silences families and makes it easier to pass harmful policies without oversight,” said Sen. Chris Rothfuss, Senate Minority Whip. “Wyoming deserves better.”
Democrats are committed to making sure Wyoming invests in schools that set students up for success, pay teachers what they deserve, and support strong communities. Families need leaders who understand that good education helps build strong families and a healthy economy.
